farm snakeyear in review
2008 was a year of dog walks and photo safaris. most days, I would grab my camera and daisy's leash and hit a local park. every season brought something new. spring had skunk cabbage and the early wildflowers taking in the sun. summer was awash with colorful flowers of every shape and size and views from my kayak on the potomac. fall peaked in the west virginia hills at spruce knob and dolly sods. things slowed in winter, but I still found fungus abundant and a bug or two. I didn't forget about my bike in '08 either. shorter rides included the babes and even ed begley jr. with his green messages. longer rides took me around the eastern shore, through gettysburg and across montgomery county. I also discovered the great mushroom people at MAWdc and tried the new boltbus to NYC. other roadtrips also took me to philly and north georgia. and cara's wedding early in the year brought together old friends I haven't seen in ages. can't beat that.

year in preview
2009...hmm, what do I want out of this fine year? first, I want to go places. I feel like I haven't seen enough of this country yet, so I'm planning some east coast roadtrips and possibly some flights farther afield. the rockies? the 49th and 50th states? perhaps. and I want to keep up with hiking and biking and skiing and fishing and kayaking and camping. I'd like to try surfing. CAPS 09 looks to be a real challenge. I'll hit all the cribbage and scrabble matches I can, and try my hand at things like kickboxing and yoga. I'd like to see a rollergirls bout, too. and go rock climbing regularly with my in-house belayer. a date or two wouldn't hurt either. and more time with the boys, sharing time in the woods, at camp with the crawdad races and at the kitchen table getting stomped in monopoly and cards.

resolution check
my 2008 PLAN not to make resolutions, but to keep a monthly checklist of to do and should do and could do worked nicely. the longer term goals were hit and miss: "plan a hot-air balloon trip, enter a photo contest, a third seagull century, CAPS 2008, find a belayer, go to NYC, see "the monkey wrench gang" when it finally becomes a movie and hopefully have finished the book by then." no hot-air trip or contest or monkey wrench yet. the seagull and CAPS were fun challenges. spring NYC was great and christmas NYC had to wait. and I have a belayer I trust to hold my line now.

coming up

CAPS 2008
rockfarmer wins! with a final count of 356. tkash broke 300 too with 301. I nearly got 100 with 99 fully documented wildflowers. new rule for '09: no repeats from previous year. narrows the selection and raises the bar.
