two casts, two trout
had a successful couple days fishing in greenbrier county. the water was low, low, low and the fish were biting. on day two, fishing with the leftover minnows, I ventured behind camp wood where matt caught the big one last trip. the water in that bend was deeper than I expected and I didn't feel like wading that deep. a few casts there didn't even get a bite. the creek didn't look deep enough in the good spot for any fish, but boy was I wrong. one cast, one trout. another cast, another trout. that's as good as it gets.
meeting greatness
attended a free online journalism symposium awards thing at the national press club. my main draw - beyond the free lunch - was one of the speakers/nominees whose work I've followed for some time. adrian holovaty, who I once thought was a girl, has some really cool, innovative, simple, useful ideas for using the web. and whatdoya know, he won the $10,000 grand prize for his chicagocrime.org hack.
monocacy floats
two trips down the river made for two wonderfully memorable days. on the first trip, ginny and joe joined james and me for my birthday float. we started at buckeystown park with james in a rental kayak and the rest of us in the big green old town and took out along greenfield road. the water was fast, so float turned into swimming back upstream. we beat the storm and I had a nice nap in the bottom of the boat while the fellas shuttled boats and cars. on the second trip, katy and her kids joined james and me for a get-away-from-it-all adventure. the water was low, but not too low for the boats. the boys took the green giant and the girls took the sleek springriver rental canoe. we rafted up for lunch. the current was much calmer and we even saw a bald eagle.
tie hopes
ginny passed along 60 beautiful neckties that belonged to her dear father. I'm planning to make a quilt from them. I found an awesome pattern I may adapt for my skill level and time. time to start baby quilting again too. three on the way as of now. congratulations to all.
